TSS - Toxic Shock Syndrome
It’s important to know that period cups can be associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). While period cups are considered safe, there is the possibility of negative side effects and it's empowering to be informed.
Let's dive into it. What is toxic shock syndrome?
TSS is a severe illness caused by toxins produced by bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. These toxins can enter the bloodstream and affect various organs, potentially leading to serious complications.
Period cups, similar to tampons, can promote bacterial growth if not cleaned
and maintained correctly. Wearing a period cup for over 12 hours may increase
this risk, so it's crucial to adhere to the recommended usage guidelines.
Additional details about TSS are provided with your flow cup.
Why does flow down below mention ocean conservation?
We love the ocean and care deeply about its preservation and health. However, we have decided to focus on healthcare first as there is such a huge immediate need. We still plan to support ocean conservation, but as a small family company we felt we needed to put energy toward one dream at a time. In the meantime we are doing our best to reduce ocean bound waste by replacing as many disposable period products as we can with our reusable pads and cups! As well as our more eco-friendly packaging.
Are they eco-friendly and sustainable?
Yes! Our period cups are made from 100% medical‑grade silicone, a safe, durable material designed to last for years. By switching to a reusable flow cup, you can replace hundreds of disposable pads and tampons, keeping waste out of landfill and reducing your environmental footprint. Oh, and of course, we have to give a nod to the ocean. Fewer disposables mean less plastic drifting into marine ecosystems. Cleaner bodies of water support thriving marine life, healthier coral reefs, and a planet that flows a little more harmoniously. After all, protecting our oceans starts with everyday choices on land and this one happens to be pretty fabulous. Every small shift on land makes a big wave in the ocean.
Are menstrual cups safe to use?
Yes, when used properly, menstrual cups are very safe. They are made from medical-grade silicone and are body-safe, hypoallergenic, and non-toxic.
How long do menstrual cups last?
A good-quality cup can last 5+ years with proper care.
We recommend replacing your period cup
every 2-3 years. You should replace yours if it has any tears, holes, or visible
damage.
Are cheaper menstrual cups just as good?
Generally not. Lower-cost cups may use lower-quality materials and/or lack safety certifications and quality control. It’s best to choose a trusted, certified brand for safety and comfort.
Can I use a menstrual cup if I have a latex allergy?
Yes! Our menstrual cups are made from silicone, which is latex-free.
